No, I don’t live in Denver. I grew up in Sierra Leone…
Is it premature to deem Frank Ocean as a musical genius? Whichever the case, I am birthing him as such. I left church Sunday and came home to a beautiful surprise. Francis (as I call him) released the visual concept for his song, ‘Pyramids’ directed by Nabil. Nabil is the mastermind behind several Kanye West videos, including ‘Mercy’ which landed him a nomination for a 2012 MTV Video Music Award.
I don’t know what it is but Frank Ocean, outside of his OFWGK†Δ crew that I, for the life of me, can not tolerate can do no wrong in my eyes. So what he might have eluded to being bisexual? It doesn’t change the fact that his mixtape, Nostalgia ULTRA is one of the best efforts in R&B to date and his album Channel Orange slayed both iTunes and Billboard charts.
No apologies. Ocean continues to taunt fans, haters and naysayers with this visual concept. The 8-minute long video does not feature both parts of the 10-minute long song, sadly enough. Instead, the 2nd, more uptempo part is what we see personified alongside masculine morphing prostituting strippers. Whew. Guard your grill cause Francis is delivering some mean punches with the underlying message in this video (and song). He also incorporated several soundbites from various album tracks.
And am I the only one who laughed with Frank every time he cut a chuckle? Shit, four shots of absinthe will have you trippy as hell. I wouldn’t know though but if you’re about that pyramid life, I challenge you to try it.
P.S. All hail John Mayer’s guitar solo.
